Twin Cities warming centers open during subzero weather
Roseville, Minn. – Twin Cities Salvation Army worship and service centers this week will open their doors every weekday during business hours (8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) to people who need warmth and safety from the subzero temperatures.
The one is exception is the center at 1604 East Lake Street, that building is closed today, because the furnace stopped working. That location will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 8:30 a.m.
Additionally, the Harbor Light Shelter at 1010 Currie St. in downtown Minneapolis will remain open all day and all night, as a warming center. There are an extra 50 spaces available for men, along with another 50 beds for both men and women at First Covenant Church (810 S. 7th St.) in Minneapolis. However, during the frigid weather, no one will be turned away from The Harbor Light Center, even if the beds are full and they can only be given a chair to sit on overnight.
“We want people to know they have a place to go to warm up and eat a hot meal,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities commander. “This is dangerously cold weather, particularly for people who are experiencing homelessness.”
The following Salvation Army locations will allow people to come in and get warm, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.:
- 2024 Lyndale Ave N, Minneapolis
- 2727 Central Ave., Minneapolis
- 1604 East Lake St., Minneapolis, includes a free meal at 12 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed until Jan. 12
- 1019 Payne Ave, St. Paul, includes a free meal at 12 p.m., Monday through Friday
- 401 W. 7th Street, St. Paul. Includes a free weekday breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
- 10011 Noble Parkway, Brooklyn Park
- 10347 Ibis St. NW, Coon Rapids. Includes a free meal 5:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday
