Volunteers needed to help serve more people in Bismarck
Donations to the Bismarck Salvation Army food shelf, 601 South Washington St., are rolling in, but we don’t have enough volunteers to help distribute the food to those who need it.
“The food shelf is open three days a week for two and a half hours, and we really need more hands to help make it all happen,” explained Major Tim Sell, Bismarck Salvation Army administrator. “If you have extra time, even for just a couple hours for one day we could really use your help.”
The food shelf moved to a “client choice” program in April, which has been very popular. The idea is for clients to “shop” for what they want at the food shelf, choosing up to 15 pounds of food per person. Additionally, families can now visit the food shelf every 60 days rather than every 90 days.
Last year the food shelf gave away 240,000 pounds of groceries all year. With nearly five months left in 2015, they’ve already surpassed that this year.
“Eventually we would like to get to the point where customers could come in every 30 days,” explained Major Sell. “But that’s just not possible if we don’t have the volunteers to help make the operation happen.”
Volunteers are needed for staging and setup, restocking the food shelves and helping customers shop for their food.
