Update on ‘happy’ homeless man

Sep 23, 2016

Last February, we told the story of Olu Johnson, a now-65-year-old man who was experiencing homelessness in Mankato, Minn. The chips were stacked against him: he was broke, in poor health, recently divorced, and without a permanent place to live.

Olu Waseye at the Mankato Salvation ArmyDespite these challenges, Johnson chose to be happy and optimistic.

“God will never let everything overwhelm me; this is just a discomfort,” Johnson said at the time. “He is in charge. He will supply my needs.”

Today, Johnson’s optimism and faith in God have paid off. He now has a place to live – Maxfield Place, a supportive housing complex operated by the Mankato Salvation Army. Rent is equal to a third of his social security income.

“I have my own apartment now,” Johnson said proudly. “It’s a new beginning.”

Recently he underwent another back surgery, and now he no longer requires the use of a walker – just a cane.

“The surgery has done wonders,” Johnson said.

Incredibly, he has enrolled in college at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is a full-time student, with dreams to become a counselor.

“I take pride in this accomplishment,” Johnson said. “In class, I raise my hand and ask lots of questions. I can’t afford to lag behind.”

He admits that college is difficult, and that he faces a long road to graduation. But considering all of the challenges he has overcome, he is confident he will succeed.

“God will always take care of me,” Johnson said. “If I run into difficulties, I get on my knees and say, ‘Father, you have my heart.’”

Salvation Army supporters have his heart, too.

“I thank God for The Salvation Army,” Johnson said.
