University Commons hosting unique food drive
WILLISTON, N.D. – The University Commons apartment complex will soon host a unique, 10-month food drive for the Williston Salvation Army. From March until December, apartment residents and members of the public will be asked to give a specific type of food each month:
- March: canned tuna
- April: peanut butter
- May: canned veggies
- June: canned fruit
- July: grains, rice, flour
- August: pasta noodles
- September: sugar and nonperishable baking items
- October: beans
- November: instant potatoes, boxed stuffing (think Thanksgiving)
- December: donor’s choice
“This food drive is both fun and uncommon,” said Captain Cappy Moore, co-leader of the Williston Salvation Army. “It is not often that a business – let alone an apartment complex – commits to a service project for nearly an entire year. We are thrilled to begin this partnership.”
Although the food drive requests specific items, other donations of nonperishable food items – along with personal hygiene products – will be happily accepted. Donations can be brought to the University Commons clubhouse or office, located at 3108 3rd Ave. E. in Williston, or to the Williston Salvation Army, 15 Main St.
The Williston Salvation Army is one of the area’s largest providers of food, serving about 250 people and families a month.
Since 1908, The Salvation Army of Williston has provided a wide range of services to assist people experiencing personal crises or emergencies. Last year it served more than 7,000 people by providing food, clothing, and other basic needs that help to stabilize families and individuals.
