Twin Cities day camps offer fun, safe, affordable option for parents
It’s that time of year when excitement about being out of school for the summer can quickly fade into the dreaded “I’m bored!” Take heart, parents.
The Twin Cities Salvation Army offers a myriad of fun, safe and affordable summer day camps to keep kids active and happy.
With activities ranging from arts and crafts, to sports and field trips, to lessons about life skills and Bible study…there’s an option for nearly everyone in the Twin Cities.

- 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 8 – July 31
- Cost $35 a week, per child, includes lunch and snacks daily.
- Theme is “Traveling Around the World in One Summer.” Each week kids will learn about new cultures and how The Salvation Army serves in that area.
- In addition to games and crafts, kids will also take part in Mission Literacy, Bible study and a new program designed to get them outside and in nature.
“It’s safe, fun and affordable,” says Brooke Tilstra, youth center director. “The kids will not fall behind this summer, but instead will thrive while learning God’s word.”

- 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 15 – August 14 (no camp on July 3).
- $75 per week, per child (10 percent discount for second child), includes lunch and snacks.
- Kids will participate in crafts, games, music and reading time in the morning. After lunch they will go on field trips everyday, weather permitting.
- Outings include parks, lakes, swimming pools and one special event a week, like a visit to The Children’s Museum, The MN Zoo or a baseball game.
“They keep pretty busy and have a great time,” said Cathy Baugh, business administrator. “It’s a great opportunity for parents to send their kids somewhere safe and affordable, too.”

- 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday- Friday, June 8 – June 26.
- $25 per week, per child (just $5 per additional child from same family), includes lunch and snacks.
- Kids will spend the morning taking classes that range from Bible study to crafts and computer lab.
- In the afternoon they will do projects in the community like cleaning up a local park, helping in the food shelf or donating their crafts.
- Two field trips a week are also included.

State licensed summer day camp, ages 6 – 12, 8 a.m.- 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Sliding fee scale, please call for rates and scholarship information. Snacks are provided, but children must bring their own lunch.
- Kids will enjoy reading and Bible study, arts and crafts, games. Plus, they will take field trips four days a week to places like Cascade Bay Water Park and The Children’s Museum.
Hmong Outreach Program, Sports Camp, ages 6 – 12, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Sports Camp ends Aug. 21.

- Camps run June 15- Aug. 28, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.; extended care is available for an additional fee from 7:30 a.m.- 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
- Registration fee: $60 for the entire summer; Program fee: $175 a week, per child. Scholarships available for the program fee (but not for registration fee). Lunch and snacks provided.

- July 7 – July 24, Animal theme. Kids will enjoy learning about bees, horses and ponies, going to the zoo and meeting K-9 and equine police officers.

- Aug. 10-14, Vacation Bible School, free for everyone; open to kids entering first grade through 13 years old.
- Aug. 17 – 28, Science camp

- Camp costs $80 a week, per child. Includes breakfast, lunch and snacks.
- “High Seas Expedition” theme. Kids will enjoy music, drama and dance. They will play games inside and outside, watch movies, do crafts and take field trips.
