Supporting homeless veterans at ‘StandDown’ event

Aug 3, 2015 | by Julie Borgen

Roseville, Minn. – Veterans experiencing homelessness and other challenges are invited to Fort Snelling Tuesday, Aug. 4 and Wednesday, Aug. 5 to receive support with everything from finding housing, to free legal and medical care – even haircuts.

The event is called StandDown for Veterans. It’s presented by the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans and was modeled after the StandDown concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations.

Salvation Army representatives will be on hand to provide veterans with information about supportive housing programs and other resources available in the Twin Cities.

“We are proud to support our veterans and thank them for their service to our country,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities Commander. “The Salvation Army has a long history of providing services to veterans and we are honored to be a part of this important event.”

StandDown for Veterans, sponsored by the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, will be held at Fort Snelling on the Boy Scout Base Camp at 201 Bloomington Road on Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
