Single mom in Virginia, Minn. turns life around

Jan 25, 2016

The Salvation Army of Virginia, Minn. is known for filling day-to-day needs such as food, shelter and clothing. But we also offer a lesser known service that is equally critical: providing long-term, one-on-one support for local families yearning for lasting success.

Local single mother Phyllis, 31, is a great example. When she came to the Virginia Salvation Army for help nearly two years ago, she had a history of homelessness, was in debt, and did not have a driver’s license. She rarely had enough money to feed her three kids, despite working two jobs.

Phyllis outside the Virginia Salvation ArmyThrough a Salvation Army initiative called “Pathway of Hope”, Phyllis began meeting with Virginia Salvation Army caseworker Jean Cheney once a week to set goals and track progress.

“I had a support system I didn’t have before,” Phyllis said.

Today, she’s a new person. After graduating from Pathway of Hope in June 2015, she is now:

  • Successfully paying off debt
  • Moving into a stable home from Habitat for Humanity
  • Going back to school
  • Happy and motivated

Phyllis got her driver’s license, too. She is now able to drive herself and her kids to school, doctor visits, and the like.

She is thankful for the Virginia Salvation Army.

“They have become my family,” said Phyllis, who now gives back as a Salvation Army volunteer.

Thankfully, her success does not appear to be slowing down.

“I still have the goal book that Jean gave me,” Phyllis said. “Hard work pays off.”
