Salvation Army gears up for Hurricane Matthew
The Salvation Army in Florida and South Carolina are gearing up to help support people impacted by Hurricane Matthew as the storm bears down on the southeast coast. 1.5 million residents in Florida are being urged to evacuate, as Hurricane Matthew strengthens to a Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of over 140 m.p.h.
The Salvation Army is calling in teams from as far away as Texas, anticipating the need to provide care for thousands of people after the storm hits.
The Army is prepared to serve as many as 100,000 meals a day and has more than 3,000 trained volunteers and staff in Florida,ready to serve food, beverages and provide emotional and spiritual care.
The storm has already killed hundreds in Haiti after rainfalls upwards of 25 inches affected the area. The Salvation Army is active in Haiti and Jamaica provide meals, support, and counseling.
