Pray for a leader on National Day of Prayer, take virtual pledge
Thursday, May 5 is the 65th annual National Day of Prayer. As you read this, thousands of people from Hawaii to Maine are praying for the United States, its leaders, and its families.
Please, take a quick moment to join these people in prayer. Say your own, or recite a special prayer written for this occasion by noted evangelist Dr. Tony Evans.
Once you bow your head, remember to pray for a leader. The leader could be anybody – your work supervisor, a local fire or police chief, or perhaps your child’s school teacher.
“Leaders at every level influence our country’s children, families, and communities in ways both large and small,” said Lt. Col. Robert Thomson, leader of The Salvation Army of Minnesota and North Dakota. “Pray that God would grant our leaders wisdom to guide our nation’s people in directions that align with His plan and His purpose.”
The Bible reminds us that repentant nations are sure to prosper: “if My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
65 Years
This year’s National Day of Prayer marks the event’s 65th anniversary.
President Harry S. Truman signed the day into law in 1952. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan designated that it be held on the first Thursday of May. Past U.S. presidents have issued national calls for prayer a total of 144 times, including George Washington in 1789 and Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
According to the NationalDayOfPrayer.org:
The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. …
The National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans. It is a day that transcends differences, bringing together citizens from all backgrounds.
Virtual Pledge to Pray
We’re hosting a virtual day of prayer, where you can pledge to join countless others in lifting their voices to the Lord. When you pledge, you’re simply saying “yes” to taking a quick moment to pray today.
Will you join us by pledging to pray at a specific time today?
The Bible tells us to “pray without ceasing.” When we each pause for even just a moment, together we can fill the entire day with an unending stream of prayers to the Lord. Thank you for responding to that call.
Please join The Salvation Army by volunteering or making a donation to support your local community.
