Northern Highlights mag: 2016 edition
If you live in Minnesota or North Dakota and you supported The Salvation Army in 2016, you need to read this.
“This” is the 2016 edition of Northern Highlights magazine. It features incredible stories about the people you impacted by donating your time and money to The Salvation Army Northern Division.
Some of the stories include:
- A former bartender who lost everything to alcoholism is now a Salvation Army officer (pastor) in Grand Forks, N.D.
- A new youth program in St. Cloud, Minn., is allowing kids experiencing homelessness to be kids again
- A man in Mankato, Minn., who was living out of his car is now a full-time college student living in his own apartment
The stories above are just the start. Find the full collection below, or view a digital copy of the magazine.
Thank you for helping The Salvation Army do the most good. Your support means the world to us, the people we serve, and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He once was lost, but now is found
Eight years ago, Lt. Matthew Beatty was a hardcore alcoholic who knew next to nothing about God. Today, he is the leader and head pastor of The Salvation Army in Grand Forks, N.D.
Beating the odds
Anna Steinhofer had it rough growing up in Fergus Falls, Minn. Her mother abused drugs and alcohol, and her father was in prison for most of her childhood. With help from Salvation Army youth programs, she overcame her turbulent childhood.
Curbing rural homelessness
Tonight more than 3,000 people will experience homelessness in Greater Minnesota, plus another 1,000 people in North Dakota. Thankfully, these people have a friend in The Salvation Army, which is often the primary agency to serve homeless populations in vast regions of Greater Minnesota and North Dakota.
Need prayer? Ask the maintenance guy
Every couple weeks, like clockwork, a man who lives with schizophrenia comes to The Salvation Army in Rochester, Minn., in need of prayer. But the man doesn’t ask to meet with any of the pastors on site. He asks to see Dave Kruger, the maintenance guy.
Hope on the Range
The boom-and-bust economy of northeast Minnesota’s Iron Range has been a bust in 2016, with thousands of people laid off. Many of these people have been relying on The Salvation Army to help them through the tough times.
The power of positivity
Homeless and broke, Olu Johnson chose to be happy and optimistic about his uncertain future. With help from The Salvation Army, his dreams are coming true.
