Nepal: Help quake survivors from 7,000 miles away
Residents of Minnesota and North Dakota who would like to support earthquake survivors in Nepal can do so by donating to The Salvation Army. (Give now.)
Every dollar of your gift will be used to help survivors. The Salvation Army’s 75 offices in Nepal are mobilizing emergency supplies and personnel right now.
“We are initiating a response to meet basic, urgent needs with shelter, food, water, and other necessary relief items,” said Lt. Col. William Mockabee, director of the Salvation Army World Service Office.
Donations are appreciated not only by the people of Nepal, but by your own neighbors with ties to the country: Today, the Twin Cities Salvation Army received a heartfelt email from a Nepali woman who moved to Minnesota 10 years ago.
“Words cannot explain how grateful my country and I are to The Salvation Army for their immense generosity,” she wrote. “Many lives will be saved because of it.”
Her family survived Saturday’s 7.8 earthquake that killed at least 4,000 and left tens of thousands homeless. Among the homeless are at least two Salvation Army officers whose home was destroyed. They, like so many other survivors, are living out in the open until help arrives.
“We ask supporters to please pray for the people of Nepal,” Mockabee said.
How to Help
Monetary donations are the most critical need for survivors. The Salvation Army has set up a designated fund where 100 percent of gifts go to relief efforts in Nepal. Give to the Nepal fund online.
You can also call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) or mail a check to The Salvation Army Northern Division, 2445 Prior Ave. N., Roseville, MN 55113. Designate “Nepal Earthquake” in the memo line.
In-Kind Donations
Due to the emergency situation, The Salvation Army will not be able to take any individual donations of household goods or clothing (gifts-in-kind) to the disaster area. If you want to help those in Nepal, monetary donations are the best way to provide immediate assistance.
