Nepal earthquake relief continues (updated 6/17, plus new video)
The Nepal earthquake has all but vanished from the news cycle, yet Salvation Army staff and volunteers maintain that the need for humanitarian relief is still sky high – especially in rural villages (watch video).
As of Saturday, The Salvation Army has served nearly 36,000 survivors in 52 affected urban and rural communities (view photos). Among other provisions, staff and volunteers have given out 148 metric tons of rice, lentils and other food. They’ve also distributed nearly 3,000 tarps for displaced individuals and families to construct makeshift shelters.
Recently, a Salvation Army team made several helicopter trips to deliver solar chargers and more than 2,000 pounds of rice to three remote villages. Without the solar chargers, the villages would have been completely without power, according to Damaris Frick, a Salvation Army field operations officer.
The Salvation Army will continue serving urban and rural communities indefinitely, as funding allows.
“Our efforts in Nepal will likely span the coming months and even years,” said Lt. Col. William Mockabee, Executive Director of The Salvation Army World Service Office.
