Morrie's Auto donates piles of backpacks, cash

Aug 14, 2019

Hundreds of kids in South Minneapolis today received new backpacks and school supplies from Morrie’s Automotive Group and its customers, who together donated nearly 3,000 backpacks to help Twin Cities children start the new school year right. (View photos.)

Morrie’s employees delivered the items to the E. Lake St. Salvation Army, where children helped them load backpacks into bins that The Salvation Army will deliver to its locations throughout the Twin Cities.

“This is an important program because many families have financial burdens,” said Captain Bersabe Vera, general secretary for the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “These school supplies give children all they need to begin the year ready to succeed.”

A mother named Dulce and her husband, Victor, were thankful to receive back-to-school supplies for their two sons, ages 7 and 8, and Dulce’s younger sister, age 13. Although Dulce and Victor both work full-time, raising three kids remains expensive.

“This will save us $80 or $90 dollars,” said Dulce, who works as a medical assistant. “That’s a huge help right there.”

In addition to school supplies, Morrie’s also donated a whopping $25,000 to benefit local Salvation Army youth programs. This is the sixth year in a row that Morrie’s has donated cash and school supplies.

“We’re proud to do this and we thank everyone for their support,” said Ben Robertaccio, marketing director for Morrie’s Automotive.
