July 4: The Salvation Army’s work creates freedom
Freedom is what makes America the greatest country on Earth.
Freedom is important to The Salvation Army for that reason, plus one more: every day, we help thousands of people to win freedom over despair.
The Salvation Army and its supporters help people win freedom from poverty, freedom from addiction, freedom from homelessness, freedom from hunger.
A great example is a Twin Cities man named David (pictured). Not long ago, The Salvation Army helped him break free from homelessness and addiction.
“I’m a new man,” said David, 39. “Before, everything in my life deteriorated under my own will.”
The Salvation Army showed David how to live according to God’s will instead of his own. The result: David is living a life of freedom that he did not know could exist.
God is a huge fan of freedom. He intentionally created people to be free (Galatians 5:13). And He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to free us from our sins.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galations 5:1).
As you celebrate Independence Day, remember to pause and reflect upon several important things: the freedoms we enjoy in America, the soldiers who fight to preserve our freedom and the soldiers who have died defending it, the freedom we have to worship God, and the freedom Jesus Christ has given us from sin.
