Earth Day clothing drives support environment and help others

Apr 21, 2015 | by Julie Borgen

Roseville, Minn. – While people around the world are celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day, dozens of Minnesota companies are helping support both the environment and The Salvation Army.

Nearly 50 local businesses are collecting clothes this week for Salvation Army stores, which support the Adult Rehabilitation Center. The Earth Day drive will help replenish stock at the stores, which is currently very low.

“Sixty percent of our sales are clothing, so when our donations are down, that’s huge,” said Michel Wong, director of product development for The Salvation Army stores in the Twin Cities.

Sales at Salvation Army stores fund the Adult Rehabilitation Center in Minneapolis, which offers very low cost drug and alcohol rehabilitation to as many as 130 men at a time. The program is 100 percent self-sustaining, with no state or federal funding.

There will be another drive coming up in May. If additional companies would like to participate, contact Michel Wong at 612-332-5855. The Salvation Army will pick up all the donations.

To donate clothing at any time, find a store or drop-box near you to drop them off or log on to www.minneapolis.satruck.org to arrange a pick-up.
