Donut History
The Salvation Army started National Donut Day during the Great Depression to commemorate the Donut Girls, who are often credited with popularizing donuts in America.
“World War I soldiers loved the Salvation Army donuts so much that they demanded more when they returned home,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities Salvation Army commander.
Donut Girls made a name for themselves during World War I in France when they made fresh, complimentary donuts for American and allied soldiers. The scent of fresh baked goods permeated the air and drew homesick soldiers to the service “hut” where they could enjoy a taste of home.
After the war, donuts quickly became the snack food of choice in homes and movie theaters across the nation.
