Devotional: Giving thanks for what you have

Nov 1, 2016

Too often, we dwell on the things we want but don’t have. We wish we had more money, or better health, or a newer car … the list goes on.

This Thanksgiving season, remember to focus on the things you do have, and thank God for them. Doing so will help to renew your mind and spirit.

“We would worry less if we praised more,” wrote famed preacher and author Harry Ironside (1876–1951). “Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.”

Indeed, prayers of thanksgiving force us to pay attention to positive things. For example, if you have arthritis in your right hand, thank God that your left hand is healthy. If you can’t have the house you want, thank God that you still have a roof over your head and food on the table.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV).

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” Colossians 3:15 (NIV).

Pray With Us

“Oh God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry. When I have work, help me to remember the jobless. When I have a home, help me to remember the homeless. When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer. … Make me concerned enough to help, by word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.” – Samuel F. Pugh
