Devotional: Dump the weight, climb the ladder

May 16, 2016

Imagine how difficult it would be to climb a tall ladder with a massive weight hanging on your back. Each rung would be harder to climb than the last, preventing you from ever reaching the top.

In the same way, sin is a weight that impedes our progress toward a deeper relationship with God. The Bible says, “So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back” Hebrews 12:1 (NCV).

What sins are weighing you down? What vices can you not eliminate from your life, no matter how hard you try?

Ask God for His help and forgiveness, and follow His word. He will set you free. “But if we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done” 1 John 1:9.

Faith in action

CampfireCampfire season has officially arrived. Use it to connect with God through this liberating spiritual exercise:

  1. Write down your worst or most nagging sins.
  2. Drop the note into a paper lunch bag.
  3. Toss the bag into the campfire.
  4. Ask God for forgiveness and watch the sins go up in smoke.
