Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day on Aug. 21

Aug 21, 2015 | by Julie Borgen

Roseville, Minn. – Today is National Senior Citizens Day, and The Salvation Army is saluting its residents in style.

The morning kicked off with a special breakfast of biscuits and gravy at The Salvation Army Booth Manor senior living facility in Minneapolis. The 21-story high rise is home to 162 people ages 62 and over. It’s been providing affordable housing and loving care to residents since 1977.

“We really care for our residents, we love them, we’re just a big family,” said Major Brenda Pittman, Salvation Army officer in charge of Booth Manor.

That family feeling is what has kept 69-year-old Judy Parker here since day one. She was grandfathered into the housing program when she was just 31, having lived in the former Salvation Army Evangeline Residence for women.

“It’s a good place to live. You get to know people and they’re family, really,” Parker said.

And that is exactly what today’s event is all about.

“We all need that feeling, whether someone is a new resident, or they’ve been here 30 years. Everyone just looks out for each other,” Pittman said.
