Army publications a necessity for doing business

Nov 11, 2016

Occasionally, a Salvation Army supporter will contact us wondering whether the cost of producing and mailing our two annual publications – Scope and Northern Highlights – is in The Salvation Army Northern Division’s best financial interests.

The answer is yes, and for several reasons.

First, we must produce these publications because they serve as annual reports needed by government agencies, foundations, our business partners, and other entities with which we work closely, along with watchdog organizations. These and other entities often require a snapshot of The Salvation Army Northern Division’s financial status, accompanied by proof-of-performance stories that illustrate how we are using our – or their – resources.

Additionally, we produce these publications because many of our everyday donors and volunteers desire a printed report they can see and touch. Some of them lack internet access in their homes, preventing them from viewing the online version of the publications.

All told, our annual publications are valuable business and marketing tools that allow The Salvation Army to showcase our important work to our partners, donors and volunteers.

They don’t cost much to produce, either. The most recent edition of Northern Highlights magazine, for example, cost less than 50 cents per copy to print and mail.

That’s a small price to pay when you consider the level of excitement these publications can generate:

“I could barely read through any articles without being moved nearly to tears,” wrote Shelley, a Salvation Army supporter who emailed us a thank you note after receiving her copy of Scope magazine in the mail. “The work you do, the people that are changed in your care … this is what Christ would have done.”
