Reuse, repurpose, recycle at Salvation Army stores

Apr 19, 2017

The Salvation Army Family Stores across Minnesota and North Dakota may be known for their red logos, but this Earth Day the stores would like you to – “think green.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw away 14 million tons of clothes each year.  Instead of tossing away that outdated sweater, pair of pants, or outfit that no longer fits, consider donating them to The Salvation Army. Not only will you be putting less in of the landfill, you’ll be helping others in need.

“When you donate to The Salvation Army stores, store profits help to fund vital programs and services for people in our community,” said Lt. Col. Lonneal Richardson, leader of The Salvation Army Northern Division.

The Salvation Army stores accept most gently used items, plus everything you donate is tax deductible.

Commonly donated items include:

  • Clothing
  • Bedding
  • Household items and collectibles
  • Small kitchen appliances and electronics
  • Furniture

Even better — your donation may be worth a bigger tax deduction than you think. (read related story)

However, The Salvation Army is not able to accept all donations. There are safety restrictions and other guidelines governing what can be resold. Some items stores cannot accept include:

  • Toys and baby items. Baby clothes are accepted, but they cannot include drawstrings or raised lettering.
  • Televisions older than five years.
  • Built-in appliances (ovens, dishwashers, etc.) and small appliances older than 10 years.
  • Mattresses and box springs.
  • Furniture with rips, broken pieces, stains, odors or pet hair.

Check with your local county recycling center for more information about how to properly dispose of those items.

Contact your local Salvation Army store with questions, and enjoy spring cleaning for a great cause.
