Generation Next: Emerging young professionals do good

Millennials are sometimes accused of being the “me, me, me” generation. Yet more and more research proves they are highly charitable. 

Even more proof: The millennials who comprise Echelon, a Salvation Army young professionals group in the Twin Cities. All they do is give, give, give.

Echelon includes about 50 members, ages 21 to 35, who advance The Salvation Army’s mission through fundraising, volunteering, social events, and networking. All are up-and-coming leaders who work in fields such as finance, real estate, marketing, and nursing.

“A lot of young professionals are looking to join organizations like Echelon where you’re meeting new people and doing fun things, while also giving back to your community,” said Sarah Grey (pictured right), Echelon president. “One of our main goals is to spread knowledge about The Salvation Army and get people on board.”

Echelon places a heavy emphasis on service. Once a month, its members perform a service project at a local Salvation Army location – such as hosting bingo for residents of our Booth Manor senior living facility in Minneapolis.

Echelon also emphasizes fun. The group regularly hosts social functions and fundraisers, including outdoor picnics with games and food (view photos), and galas at popular Twin Cities restaurants. Additionally, Echelon has been holding an increasing amount of networking events that feature professional guest speakers.

“It’s such a cool opportunity and a great benefit for our members to learn from people who are established in their professional careers,” Grey said. 

Grey used to belong to an Echelon chapter in Dallas, Texas that includes more than 500 members. She wants the Twin Cities chapter to become just as large. 

“Everybody in Dallas is hyper-aware of what The Salvation Army does,” Grey said. “I don’t think we have that yet in (the Twin Cities) for our age group. But it’s unbelievable how much The Salvation Army is doing here. I think a lot more people would get involved if they knew.”
