Brainerd Lakes Area backpack giveaway Aug. 17 – 18
BRAINERD, Minn. – When you factor in the cost of backpacks, school supplies, new clothes and shoes, the average family spends nearly $700 to prepare their children for school, according to the National Retail Federation. The Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army will give away backpacks and school supplies this Thursday and Friday to help offset those expenses.
“We know it can be a challenge for families to pay for everything their children need, as they head back to school,” explained Lieutenant Grant Holloway. “If you need help, don’t hesitate to stop in.”
The backpack giveaway is Thursday and Friday at The Salvation Army Worship and Service Center, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m. Parents must bring a piece of mail with their current address along with their own ID, and an ID for each child—a school ID, medical card or report card will work.
Hundreds of families are expected to turn out over the two days so we ask that you please pack a little bit of patience.
“This really helps us out a lot,” said Shelly, a Brainerd mother of three who has received backpacks in the past. “The girls love seeing what they get. It’s such a blessing for us and for everybody else.”
Back to school donations were collected earlier this summer, but financial gifts to help purchase more supplies can still be mailed to the Brainerd Lakes Area Salvation Army, 208 S. Fifth St., Brainerd, MN 56401. Please note on your check that the donation is for school supplies. You can also give online.
