National Donut Day: Find a ‘freebie’ on Friday, June 2

Added on Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Did you know The Salvation Army is often credited with popularizing the donut in America?

Serving donuts to troops during World War IIt all started during World War I when female Salvation Army volunteers–affectionately known as Donut Girls–brought donuts to American GI’s on the front lines in France. This year marks the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, and Donut Girls serving sweet treats on the front lines.

“These simple treats comforted soldiers,” explained Lt. Col. Lonneal Richardson, Salvation Army Northern Division Commander. “The donut’s popularity among soldiers followed them home to America, where demand boomed after the war.”

Bakers in the United States quickly jumped in to meet the demand and the donut became a staple here.

Donut-Girls-300x200National Donut Day was started by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the legacy of the Donut Girls, and to raise money for people in need during the Great Depression.

This year, Donut Day is on Friday, June 2. Celebrate the day with free treats at various locations in Minnesota and North Dakota.
