Preliminary numbers show historic fundraising weekend
The historic “2 state – 2 day - $2 million” double donation event, Friday and Saturday, was a resounding success for Salvation Army centers across Minnesota and North Dakota.
The Twin Cities Salvation Army red kettles marked the weekend with the best two-day fundraising total in its history bringing in $487, 000. Although final numbers, including online and mailed in donations, won’t be available until mid-week, indications are that the metro area could hit $1 million in contributions for Friday and Saturday. Going into the weekend the campaign sat at $5.3 million.
“We are in a very strong position to hit our $10.8 million goal by the end of the year,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities Salvation Army commander. “The community certainly rallied to our aide.”
The scenario was duplicated across the states of Minnesota and North Dakota as Salvation Army centers reported strong increases in giving – some areas two, three and even four times the average. This community benevolence was sparked by a small group of donors who pooled together $2 million in matching funds.
“This is really what the anonymous donors hoped would happen,” said Strickler. “It wasn’t about their ability to give a large gift, it was about all of the citizens in two states taking a part in this amazing success – hundreds of thousands making that extra effort to help those less fortunate.”
Not to be left out in this extraordinary weekend, St. Grand, the mystery donor stuffing red kettles with 10 crisp $100 bills, made three signature gifts in the Twin Cities – one on Friday and two on Saturday.
After the iconic red kettles retire from the scene on Christmas Eve, donations by mail or online will be integral for The Salvation Army to make its fundraising goals throughout the two state region.
