Blog: A Memorial Day thank you to my heroes
Written by Rose Peterson, a Development Associate at The Salvation Army Northern Division.
Memorial Day (view e-card) is a holiday to remember our military men and women who died while serving our country. Since it’s that time of year that we honor and remember these brave souls, I would like to share a short experience I had with a military man.
Not long ago, I received a call from a gentleman who wanted to give a donation. While taking down his information, he offered a short story. “The reason I give to The Salvation Army is because, when I was a soldier, they gave me a donut and coffee—and they didn’t charge me a penny.”
To this day, years later, this man has kept that memory close to his heart—and so will I. Why will I? Because my dad was one of those soldiers as well.
Now that’s what The Salvation Army is about: service. Not only does The Salvation Army extend a helping hand to those enduring long-term hardships and serve those experiencing unexpected hiccups, but The Salvation Army can even serve soldiers during their time of duty.
In honor of Memorial Day, I would like to extend a huge thank you and salute to all our military men and women. It’s because of you that we can enjoy our freedom. In my book, you are my heroes!
