Austin volunteer earns ‘Pay it Forward’ award (video)
(Watch video) – A long-time Austin Salvation Army volunteer got a special surprise visit, public accolades and six, crisp, one-hundred dollar bills in honor of his service to the community.
Last week, KAAL-TV’s ABC 6 News aired a community segment called, “Pay it Forward.” The TV station partnered with Home Federal Bank to surprise John Gray with $600 as a way of saying thanks for all that he does. Terry Miller nominated Gray. While John was meeting with Captain David Amick at the Austin Salvation Army, Miller surprised him with $600 and a camera crew.
“Hi John,” smiled Miller. “For the service that you have done for The Salvation Army and for The Arc of Mower County, we nominated you for the KAAL-TV ‘Pay it Forward’ campaign. You’re an inspiration to many, John. We love your heart for God. We love your heart for giving and we really respect it. Thank you so much for all you do for this community.”
Miller counted out the $600 as he handed it to Gray who graciously accepted and said he would be donating half of it to The Salvation Army and the other half to The Arc of Mower County.
“I’m blessed, and it’s truly a personal reward to help those that are in need our community,” smiled Gray. “That’s why I stay involved.”
