Coats for Kids

The Salvation Army Coats for Kids program has been keeping Twin Cities kids warm for 29 years. The 2014 coat drive will be Oct. 6 – 19. Donated items will be distributed at our Salvation Army centers at the end of October.

Want to donate before the drive? You can give online to help buy new coats. A $16 donation covers the cost of a warm winter coat for a kid in need. Here are some other ways you can help and information for those who need help:

Give a Coat Starting Oct. 6

Please take new and clean, gently-used coats and winter accessories (mittens, gloves, hats, snow boots, snow pants, etc.) to one of our following Coats for Kids partners from Oct. 6-19.

Don’t have a coat to donate? You can also give online to help buy new coats. A $16 donation covers the cost of a warm winter coat for a kid in need.

Each year, thousands of children residing in the metro area – from infants to 18 year-olds – receive a warm coat for the winter through Coats for Kids. And, you can be the one to help put the coat in their hands and a smile on their face.  We have a variety of ways for volunteers to help – from answering phones at a phonebank to sorting donations or helping parents find coats for their kids. Click the links below to learn more about each opportunity.

Host a Coat Drive

Are you a local businesses, civic organization or church group interested in organizing a coat drive for Coats for Kids?

We have electronic copies of posters you can use to advertise your collection, and we are happy to arrange pick up for drives that bring in more than 100 coats. For smaller collections, we ask that donations be dropped off at our divisional headquarters, 2445 Prior Ave. N. in Roseville.

Please contact Coats for Kids manager Jessica Hering at 651-746-3591 for details on getting started with a drive.

Need a Coat?

The Coats for Kids program provides coats and winter accessories to children. Our coat distribution sites in the Twin Cities will be open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 30 starting at 10 a.m. Coats will be given out until 6 p.m. or until supplies run out, whichever comes first.

There is no pre-registration for the event, but you will need to come to the distribution site which serves your local area, based on your address. Our community partner United Way can help you determine which of the eleven coat distribution sites you should attend when you call 211 or 651-291-0211.

Families who fulfill the following eligibility requirements are helped on a first-come, first-serve basis:

  • Dependent children must be ages 0-17
  • Bring a photo ID
  • Bring a current piece of mail confirming your ZIP code
  • Bring one form of ID for each child – copies accepted (medical card, social security card, birth certificate, school ID)

Parents shop for one coat and one winter accessory per child. Children should not accompany parents to the distribution.

Call the Coats for Kids Hotline at 651-746-3412 for more information.

About Coats for Kids

The Salvation Army Coats for Kids program has provided 312,000 coats and winter accessories to children in need over nearly three decades. The annual Twin Cities coat drive is held in October. After donations of new or gently used winter gear are collected, sorted, and cleaned, families are invited to our centers to select needed items to help keep their children warm through the winter.
