St. Cloud in desperate need of school supplies
SAINT CLOUD, Minn. – The Salvation Army needs your help to make sure local children have the backpacks and school supplies they need in the fall, as it anticipates serving 1,000 more kids than last year.
Catholic Charities has announced that it will no longer be providing school supplies, leaving The Salvation Army as the only nonprofit in St. Cloud to fill a huge need.
“Every year it’s a challenge to pull off the event,” explained Shannon Smithers, event organizer at the St. Cloud Salvation Army. “While it may seem like a simple distribution of school supplies it’s really difficult to get enough money donated and enough volunteers to assist and make it all happen.”
Last year, The Salvation Army provided 400 kids with backpacks and school supplies. But now, it anticipates needing to serve 1,000 more.
“We’re going to need a lot of help to pull this off,” said Smithers. “Now, we’re not only trying to get enough backpacks and supplies for the kids we typically help, but we also have to find supplies for about 1,000 more kids Catholic Charities would normally help.”
Smithers said corporate donations or even a community-wide “Back to School” drive could save the day.
“School just ended for many so we’re getting the word out now to families who may have gently used backpacks and are willing to donate them,” Smithers explained. “Also, we’re praying for a large group or company to help fundraise or volunteer for the event.”
The Salvation Army expects to hold a distribution for backpacks and school supplies in late July or early August, so the push is on now to start collecting them.
The supplies in most demand are backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, glue, folders and markers.
